I normally carry a large pile of stones around (never thought to throw
'em at mimics), so I don't see the problem in this as stated. If my
suggestion were implemented -- to require MULTIPLE stones -- I would
expect users to only do this when they really had no other way of
dealing with feature mimics. And I think this is a GOOD thing.

OTOH, if mimics are actually this annoying, perhaps we're doing the
wrong thing with them.

Or perhaps we need to make a few different things that can happen
because you throw stones too annoyingly. Remember what happened to
that fool of a Took when he threw a stone into the well of Moria...
Some ideas include:

+ Some mimics might sleep until disturbed by damage.
+ Some mimics might have a one-time explosion effect ("the rock
shatters -- there was a rockworm cocooned inside!")
+ Some mimics could have one or more reaching tentacles, or even be
somewhat mobile after being disturbed.
+ Some might be best left asleep ("the daskdraudigs uncoils from the stone.")

Speaking of the latter, we now have fairly robust tentacle support
used for kraken and the chaos gate spell. Could that be used to model
extremely large monsters as well?

That last point is a bit awkward, I agree. Perhaps the inclusion of
mimics should cause us to think about the default settings for
autoexplore. Autostopping a few paces from every unknown item would
seem VERY annoying...

I don't see why; it seems to subtract from the possibilities. It
doesn't make mimics any less annoying.
