Friends,

[At least Patrick can help me... But maybe others have some experience in the
matter too.]

So... UNIMARC, 100 GENERAL PROCESSING DATA, $a/8-16 Type of Publication Date;
Publication Dates 1 and 2... $a/8 reads:

<quote>
h = monograph with both actual and copyright/privilege date.

The item's date of publication differs from the copyright/privilege date quoted
in the item (EX 20). If the date of publication is unknown, use
'd' (EX 8). Privilege is defined as a monopoly granted by a government body to
an author or a bookseller for an edition over a fixed period of
time.

Publication date 1 contains the date of publication.
Publication date 2 contains the copyright/privilege date.
</quote>

My problem: the copyright date applies to what ?

the crm:F22_Self-Contained_Expression (the original expression) ?

the crm:F22_Self-Contained_Expression (the translation) ?

the crm:F24_Publication_Expression ?

the crm:F3_Manifestation_Product_Type ?

I have in front of me two examples:

Ex.1.
Copyright  2001 Jonathan Franzen
 2004, 2011, 2013 by Editura Polirom, pentru traducerea în limba română.

Ex.2.
 2004 by Columbus Rose, Ltd.
 RAO International Publishing Company, 2006, pentru versiunea în limba română.

In the first case, we have obviously the copyright of the writer, i.e. I would
relate:

<crm:F22_Self-Contained_Expression (the original expression)>
<crm:CLP104_subject_to> <crm:E30_Right> < crm:P82_at_some_time_within>  2001.

But we have also 2004, the first year of the translation, i.e. I would relate:

<the crm:F22_Self-Contained_Expression (the translation)>
<crm:CLP104_subject_to> <crm:E30_Right> < crm:P82_at_some_time_within>  2004.

Or 2013 ? as:

<the crm:F24_Publication_Expression> <crm:CLP104_subject_to> <crm:E30_Right>
<crm:P82_at_some_time_within>  2013.

So, which one ?

In the second case, the copyright of Columbus Rose, applies to the "source"
<crm:F24_Publication_Expression> or to the "source"
<crm:F3_Manifestation_Product_Type> ?

And what about RAO's copyright on the "Romanian version". What's that ? The
Romanian <crm:F24_Publication_Expression> or the RAO's
<crm:F3_Manifestation_Product_Type> ?

Actually, there is a common practice of the cataloguers ? What should I expect
in <Publication date 2> ?

Not to mention:

<quote>
d = monograph complete when issued, or issued within one calendar year

Publication date 1 contains the date of publication.
Publication date 2 contains blanks.
</quote>

and

<quote>
EX 8: d1972####

An item where only the copyright date is known. Code 'h' is therefore not used.
</quote>

How am I supposed to guess when <Publication date 1> is the date of
publication or that of copyright date ?

Or should I give-up pedantry and ignore the whole issue ?

Thanks,

Dan
