Dear CIDOC CRM SIG, we are the DORA research project at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg, focusing on rights management in archives. As mentioned during the meeting, we would now like to open an issue and further develop a proposal for a CIDOC CRM extension that provides semantic links between CIDOC CRM and ODRL (Open Digital Rights Language). Since our presentation, we discovered another project, called REEVALUATE (Home page - REEVALUATE<https://reevaluate.eu/>), that has independently worked on linking the two ontologies. The ontology they developed, called CACAO, is available here: https://reevaluate.github.io/cacao-ontology/index-en.html REEVALUATE comes to the same conclusions as we did regarding the semantic alignment of the following classes: - ODRL Asset (ODRL Information Model 2.2<https://www.w3.org/TR/odrl-model/#asset)>) and CIDOC CRM E72 Legal Object - ODRL Party (ODRL Information Model 2.2<https://www.w3.org/TR/odrl-model/#party)>) and CIDOC CRM E39 Actor In addition, we would like to connect ODRL Policy with CIDOC CRM E30 Right through a new property. REEVALUATE addresses this by introducing the property "expressedBy", linking E30 Right (domain) to ODRL Policy (range). For a CIDOC CRM extension, we would suggest the property name: P?_isExpressedBy (Domain: E30 Right, Range: ODRL Policy). We would also propose defining the corresponding inverse property, tentatively named: P?i_expresses (Domain: ODRL Policy, Range: E30 Right). We hope that an official extension will prevent future projects from having to resolve the same interoperability issue on their own, as was the case with both DORA and REEVALUATE. Furthermore, Martin Doerr kindly shared with us the files of the "Digital Rights Ontology" (DRO) developed within the European-funded IST project CASPAR (Cultural, Artistic and Scientific knowledge for Preservation, Access and Retrieval, IST-2005-2.5.10). We believe this work may provide valuable guidance for modelling additional rights-related concepts. We would greatly appreciate your thoughts on these proposals and warmly welcome anyone interested in contributing to the development of an ODRL extension for CIDOC CRM.
