What about e4-RCP folks outnumber the IDE nerds significantly
(amongst active contributors) so it's there call.

This contrast makes no sense to me. The magic of Eclipse is that it has
provided a generic platform for a variety of purposes. So all the
traditional users of Eclipse are IDE nerds.
I presume the e4-RCP folks develop their software on Eclipse, so they
too are IDE nerds.
So all Eclipse committers are 'IDE nerds' and the IDE experience has
been demonstrably degraded (attachment 206371 for bug 362718).
I feel strongly that we must revert to 3.x as the promoted environment
until 4.x can reduce it's measured degradations to perhaps 10%.
