We should also bring it back in master to avoid the same problem. Current 
Xtext with our master won't work. Xtext will release a new version with 
the fix, but people might have the old version and update Photon from our 
I-build p2 repository for example.

I am particularly interested in knowing more about the code in HEAD that 
doesn't use the internal method. Doesn't it mean we have a way out without 
putting back that JDT's  internal method for 4.7.1a?

In case the PMC decides positively (which I don't know as of now),
I created a gerrit [1].

I don't want to play a blame game, but still I would like to understand
why this problem was not detected during the .1a RC1 cycle.
