Nope -- not even on my Miata, which is a light little go-kart. The power
steering rack on the Miata is a MUCH closer ratio than the manual racks in
Miatas, making it easy to be able to flick the wheel back and forth to
wherever I want it to go. Our CRXs, with manual steering, are pretty
light. The only difference is that it isn't as consistant as a car with
power steering. It depends on the surface you are on, the speed you're
going, etc, as to how the steering feels. On a car with power steering,
it pretty much feels the same all the time.

The only significant disadvantage that I see to power steering is that
there are some instances where it just can't keep up and the car can
actually become harder to steer than a car WITHOUT power steering. Fast
side-to-side transitions that go from nearly one wheel lock back to the
other cause it to lose power assist (I've only experienced this in a
parking lot going from one lock to another to turn around and then make a
subsequent turn, and when racing at a really tight autocross course), but
otherwise it's okay. The only way around this is to do what Honda is
doing with their new cars -- electric-assist power steering, instead of
hydraulic. No matter how fast you go from lock-to-lock and back on my
S2000, the power steering has no problems keeping up.
