This is only really an issue on DOHC VTEC engines. SOHC VTECS only have VTEC on the intake side, which is perfect for boost -- you want to suck in as much air and fuel as possible.
Cam gears are an inexpensive way to do a lot of tuning on a DOHC VTEC engine to dial out overlap.
