HI,
I have a 1990 Honda Crx Si, and i have a problem, i bought a engine and the guy that i bought it from says it has 60,000 miles on it, and he bought it from japan! The thing is im having a whole lot of problems with it! Its blowing black and blue smoke, it takes a while to start, it has a oil leak and transmission leak! He says the engine is a 1990 Crx SI Engine, but the deal is, I got a new clutch put in to it, and the person who was putting the clutch in said he tried to put a 1990 Crx flywheel on for the clutch and it wouldn't fit then he tried a 1989 Crx flywheel on and it fit! Does that mean my engine is a 1989 Year and not a 1990! The Honda dealer said the couldnt tell me if my engine is a 1990 or a 1989  because my car is a late model and that they didnt have information for my year, but that i have a Pin number on my engine that should tell me what year it is, and I need to know what year it is! Plus the guy said I have a 6 month warranty on it! but ! he hasent done anything to it yet and now he has refuse to fix my car and voided the Warranty on it because of all the problems it has! So now my car is sitting in the back of the yard! I asked him if I could have the orignial paper work on where he bought the engine from! As he said from Japan, but he hasnt gave no original reciept yae on it and I have asked him so many times for it and he says his book keeper has it and its been about a month already! So I think he's hiding somethig about the Engine! will you please help me out!
My e-mail is sandy [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you would please email me back as soon as possible! Thank you!

Hi Sandy -

OK.. First lets start by trying to identify the engine block first.  I am not 100% sure on this but there were three engines that were used/offered in the Japanese model CRX:

ZC (1988-89 CRX si) - 1.6l, DOHC 16-valve, MPFI.
ZC (1988-91 CRX 1.5X) - 1.6l, SOHC 16-valve, Dual
Carburetors.
B16A (1990-91 CRX VTEC) - 1.6l, DOHC VTEC 16-valve, Multi Point Fuel Injection (MPFI) with knock sensor.

So, anyone of these could have been used but chances are good that it would either be the B16A or the ZC used in the 88-89 CRX si.

The US also had three engines from the factory:

D16A6 (1988-91 CRX si) - 1.6l SOHC 16-valve, MPFI.
D15B2 (1988-91 CRX dx) - 1.5l, SOHC 16-valve, Dual Point Fuel Injection.
D15B6 (1988-91 CRX hf) - 1.5l, SOHC 8-valve, MPFI.

And to be thorough...

Canadian -

D16A6 (1991 CRX SE) - 1.6l, SOHC 16-valve, MPFI.
D16A6 (1988-91 CRX si) - 1.6l, SOHC 16-valve, MPFI
D15B2 - (1988-91 CRX dx) - 1.5l, SOHC 16-valve, Dual-Point Fuel Injection.

European -

B16A1 (1990-91 CRX 16i-VT) which was basically the same as the B16A listed above.
D16A8 (1988-89 CRX 16i-16) - 1.6l, DOHC 16-valve, MPFI with catalytic converter.
D16A9 (1988-89 CRX 16i-16) - 1.6l, DOHC 16-valve, MPFI without catalytic converter.

You mentioned that you had the engine number.  It would help if you could share that with me to help figure out what engine you have.  Do you also know off hand if the transmission is the stock 1990 CRX si transmission?  Or was it replaced with another one?  Some ZC/B16A owners replaced their stock transmissions with one that matched their respected engine.

As for the dealer not being able to assist, not sure why they would have a problem.  They should at least be able to look at the engine number and tell you if it's from Japan or from the US.  Actually, if you do indeed have either a B16A or the DOHC ZC it's pretty obvious ... a dead give away is the fact that it is a DOHC engine.  :^)

The other problems you are describing sounds like someone who did the engine installation (regardless if it was from Japan or not) did not know how to do it properly or the engine itself is *bad*.  If it's the later, there are just too many things that I can think of that will cause the symptoms you described.

My advice to you is to seek out a local shoppe.  One that actually knows something about Honda's (both US and Japan offerings...) and have them take a look.  It doesn't sound like the person whom you got it from is going to be much help and as much as I hate to say it, I would just forget about him and find someone who is willing and able to help.

I have your personal contact information and I'll see if I can locate someone in or near your area.  In the mean time, I've included the CRX Owners Discussion Group as well as Brian Gillespie of HA Sport Performance (http://www.hasport.com).  I would highly recommend that you check out their web site as there are some very useful information on there.
