Robin,

Something cold is obviously expanding, then the whine goes away.  See if you
can localize where the sound is coming from (front, rear, location on
engine, etc.).  A couple of innocent guesses:

1. Metallic "whine" around 2-3k rpm may be the heat shield rattling (it's
above the cat.)
2. could be the shifter bushings
3. alternator
