On the second Gen (at least my 88) the gauge sender is towards the front of the tank, while the pump is on the back. They are totally separate.

My fuel guage appears to have less fuel than it should. When I first started using my car, the tank would read empty after about 8 gallons. Now it will read empty after about 4 gallons. Is there any corrolation between the float in the fuel delivery system to the fuel pump? I am hoping they are two different pieces and my car is not going to stall out one day from lack of fuel. If I do need a new fuel pump, how much does it cost and what tools do I need? I am back at school with some tools, but not a ton. Glad to be back on the list. I have other questions but I think this is my most pressing issue at the moment. Thanks a ton everyone, Ern
