Honda ECU's are pretty much just glorified PLCs. They read imputs from
analog circuits and calculate when to fire what for how long, be it spark
plugs or injectors. Unless your friend is an embedded systems programmer
or has a lot of knowledge with realtime operating systems, he's going to
have his work cut out for him. The idea behind realtime operating systems
is that you have a finite amount of time to calculate and do something.
If you fail, you might as well just turn off because you're screwed
anyway. Hence, open loop mode on Honda ECU's. "BAH! Some sensor has lost
it's mind. Run away, run away!" and it reverts to stock fuel curves,
timing maps, etc. It may run like crap after that, but it should still
run.
