A couple of years ago in a local mag, Max Power or something equally ‘kiddie’ which is usually full of tarted up Vauxhalls, Renaults and Peugeots, they did a little feature on an American CRX. It was mainly a show car and had JDM Integra headlights, Supra tails and a suicide door on the passenger side.

IMHO it looked odd because of the length of the doors. In the UK I’m only used to seeing suicide doors on old gangster style hot rod things in movies which have very stocky doors, I find this shape is more suited to the look. I often try to imagine my car with doors hinged on the A-pillar or the roof. I saw a Mk2 Golf with doors hinged on the A-pillar (as well as a sideways opening bonnet) and it looked great!

Jenn -

Sorry it has taken me a long time to reply back.  I've been so busy lately.

To answer your questions -

Let me start off by saying that I am from a Hot Rod family.  Meaning that I grew with Chevy's, Ford's, Oldsmobile, GM, etc...  My family restored them, tricked them out and everything in between.  I sort of followed but I did it in the VW world (among the many other makes and model of cars I've owned).  I restored VW Bug's, tricked them out and everything in between,

Having said that, I have a pretty open mind when it comes to automobiles.  I appreciate a vehicle that has been kept stock or has been restored back to stock specifications.  I also marvel and sometimes stand back in awe when I see a really radical custom.

Basically, do what you want to your car regardless what others may say.  The bottom line is how you feel about the car since you are the one that is going to have to live with it.  Look at my car... some people tell me it's too rice, other's say it isn't or that it is kinda rice but not as bad as many others.

Personally, I don't really care because the way it looks now is the look I was looking to get and I'm very pleased at the out come (even though it took about 4 years to get it to where it is today).

You can't please everyone.

So.. having said that... if I think it will look corny with the Lambo doors?  No, not really.  I think it looks kinda cooll.  But if I would do it to my Rex?  Probably not.  I guess because the doors on the CRX are pretty long doors for such a small car, it does lend itself to look a bit out-of-proportion when they are opened up.  But I'm not disgusted when I see a CRX with Lambo type doors.

What I would like to see, and I'm somewhat surprised I haven't seen yet, is a CRX with a suicide doors.  I've done it on some of my VW Bug's and we've done them to a few of the Chevy's we use to own.

Now, it may not be easily possible with the CRX.  I haven't really looked at the B pillar area close enough to see if it's possible and if not, what it would take.  If anything, it might be a combination of not having enough integral strength to hold the door (the CRX doors are pretty damn long and heavy for a small car) and there might not be enough clearance for it to open properly (which is what I believe may be the reason).

But, if someone ever did a suicide door on a CRX, that would be pretty trick IMHO.

Referring back to my CRX, when I got it back in 1998, I liked how it looked but I knew I was going to change it.  How much of the stock look I was going to change was to be determined.  So what I did was I attended a lot more Jap-Import car shows like the Hot Import Days and Nights.  When to a few other local Jap-Import shows (including the "Car Salon's type venue).  While many were not CRX's, I still got a lot of great ideas of what was available and what was possible.  Speaking with their owners was also invaluable.  I still keep in contact with many of them today.

By going to those type of shows and meets, it helped me determine what I wanted to do with my car (and I'm not just talking exterior but also performance upgrades as well).

So, asking me what you should do with your car so that people will drool over it can only be answered by you.  If you have the time and money to invest in Lambo type doors and you like how they look then go for it.  People like different things when it comes to automobiles.  I've seen people go ape over a completely 100% stock automobile and I've seen people react the same when they see a one-off paint job.

So, like I said, what ever it is that makes you go ape over a CRX, that is what you should do.  Don't worry about what others will say or think.  The only time that should matter is if you are looking to enter your car in a show and compete.

BOL and please keep me updated on what you plan to do!
