Replace the *entire* axle... It is a lot easier. At work, I make it a
common practice to replace the entire axle with a complete rebuilt unit
that features a NEW outer CV joint, since Hondas tend to eat outer
joints faster than other cars when the boots finally rip. Besides,
since you mentioned that you experienced an "out-of-balance" sensation,
the only thing that comes to mind is that the joint itself has been
subjected to sand or dirt and worn the inner guts enough to bind and
create the vibration you described.
But if your heart is set on simply replacing the outer boot, most
aftermarket boots come as a kit featuring the boot itself, inner and
outer clamps, and a tube of grease. You should be fine if you just go
ahead and use the entire contents of the tube.
If it was me, I'd replace the entire axle. While you could replace just
the outer joint & boot, they are actually more expensive than purchasing
an entire axle. Chalk it up to the rebuilding industry, I guess.
