If you want performance, I would stick with the 14 inch and perhaps even look into a 13 inch wheel. The 13 and 14 inch wheels will be lighter and offer less rolling resistance.

FWIW, I run 14 inch Panasport rims on my CRX for AutoX and OpenTrack events. I run a 195/60-14 inch Toyo tire on them. I've actually used these same set of wheels and tires on my past non-Honda cars (VW GTi, Porsche 914/4, 914/6, 911, 912 and the BMW 2002).

The Panasport also does not bump me up into the modified class (even when I stuck them on the Porsche which has stock wheels of 15 inch). But if you plan to run with a sanction body (i.e. SCCA, NASA, etc...), check the rules and regulations.

First Gen's have a torsion front and springs in the rear. Most of the First Gen owners that I know of that AutoX their cars go with a slightly stiffer spring and shock setup in the rear (something like a Tokico Illumina, KYB AGX or Koni adjustable) and go with beefier set of anti-roll bars.

You can also add shock tower braces to help keep them in check.

On the Datsun 510 that I owned (for a very brief time) which only was used for AutoX, I adjusted the torsion arms up a spline which gave it about an inch of drop. I then used Eibach Sport Springs (although I don't think they were called Sport Springs back then...) and a set of Biltstien shocks (the general purpose ones that you can get at just about any shoppe).

Larger anti-roll bars and shock tower braces were also added. My 510 also came with a set of 13 inch aftermarket wheels ... I don't recall the maker but they were really lightweight (I want to say they were all aluminum) and they weren't the Cragar "Slotted" wheels.. (which would have been cool too...).

Anyway, that 510 stuck like glue on the pavement. The only adjusting I needed to do was the anti-roll bars (I had the ones where they had a linkage and you could dial them in). I had a blast in that car and that was my first experience with the Hitachi carbs. For me, they were a PITA. They had a lag/hesitation whenever you went to a WOT .. it was a known characteristic of these carbs I later found out (I won't go into detail..).

Performance.

I need to know what will fit in the wells and not rub during cornering.
I was also wondering what putting larger wheels on does to the rest of
the handling characteristics, since it is expecting the 14x5. Is the
added weight a factor?

Are you going for looks or upgrading the wheels and tires for
performance? I have know people who have put 17 inch wheels on them and
I would think 18 inch would fit but you will get rubbing.

What is the largest wheel size I can use on an 86 Si without any
suspension mods?
