Actually, all they really need is a car with some decent tires. They don't even necessarily have to be winter tires (though they're much better), but your tires are THE biggest difference in the snow.

There are 2 H2s and Navi's, an Excursion, and countless "mini" SUVs just on my one block. People here swear they need the SUVs to navigate (no pun intended) through the "harsh" winters here. I have less trouble in the rex or 4 cyl Accord than most of them. They need to spend a few of their monthly payments on driving lessens then they could drive reasonably sized cars and wouldn't need 3-4 parking spaces at the store...
