I heard the feed from NASA in the seconds before they lost contact,
mentioning a problem with the tire pressure telemetry. Also hearing the
reports of heat-shield tiles falling off during the launch, I'd imagine
perhaps the tires became extremely overheated and overpressured during
re-entry and perhaps exploded, damaging the gear-doors. Going that
fast, any kind of structural stress would be amplified hugely. If the
gear doors came off at that point, I could see the entire airframe
disintegrating around them quickly.
