Subject: Julian Meet & Drive (02/08/03) - Update
Update - February 03, 07:42am PST.
The 4th Annual Julian Meet and Drive is less than 5 days away. As of this email, there are 24 cars and about 41 people to be there in attendance.
To see all who is planning to attend, visit http://www.crx.org/southcal/rsvp.html
There was concern about rain for that weekend but as of today, it looks as if it will just be cool and perhaps partly cloudy. I'll be monitoring the weather, though.
Meeting date & time
February 8, 2002 (Saturday)
9am (PST), Plan to depart around than 10am (PST).
If you're running late, give a call!
Phone: (760) 802-5022
The meeting/starting point will be the Shell gas station off the 5 freeway:
Shell
160 Encinitas Blvd.
Encinitas, CA. 92024
(760) 753-8610
Directions
From the L.A. area (or North of Oceanside California):
- Highway 5 South (San Diego)
- Take the Encinitas Blvd. off ramp
- Make a right onto Encinitas Blvd, the Shell station will be on your right
From the San Diego area (or South of Del Mar California):The Route
- Highway 5 North (Los Angeles)
- Take the Encinitas Blvd. off ramp
- Make a left onto Encinitas Blvd, the Shell station will be on your right
We'll start out on the coast in Encinitas heading East towards Escondido by way of Del Dios Highway. Once we're in Escondido, we'll take our traditional route to Julian by way of Highway 78 (which will take us through San Pasqual Valley, Romona and Santa Ysabel before arriving in Julian.
Because the group is large, we'll be making a few planned stops to ensure that the group stays together for the entire trip (and for photo opportunities, restroom breaks, etc...).
I had hoped to have some sort of map online but I could not locate a decent one that encompasses the entire route. At the very least, I'll have a printed handout which details the route along with the planned stops along the way. We will go over the route that morning prior to departing and answer any questions and concerns that you may have.
What to bringWhat to expect
- If you have a Motorola "TalkAbout" or one that is compatible, please bring it. If you have an extra to loan, that would be appreciated.
- Cameras are encouraged.
- Given that it's been known to Snow in Julian, although I hope we won't have any of that this weekend, I highly recommend that you bring a jacket or sweat shirt. For those that remembered last years run, it got pretty damn cold up there with the wind chill.
- Since the group is too large to stop in Julian for lunch, we will do a late lunch at the end of the drive when we get back down into Escondido. We'll make a decision that morning as to where. So I would encourage you to bring something to drink and something to snack on during the drive (i.e. stock up at the Shell station that morning).
If you've never driven Del Dios Highway and the back roads from Escondido to Julian you'll be in for a treat as there are some nice scenery along the way.
Although this is a CRX meet, I am allowing other makes of vehicles to attend. The more the better (and the more fun) so please spread the word and invite your friends!
Because we will be mostly on single lane roads and passing through some smaller towns along the way, I ask that everyone in attendance show some respect for the locals. There are at least three known speed traps on this route that I am aware of so we'll be watching our speed as we go.
Given the rather large size of the group, there will be some challenges in the beginning until we get going on Del Dios Highway. The challenges include lighted intersections and a few four way stops. I will go over these areas before we take off and explain how we'll keep the group together. It shouldn't be that bad... just a little slow in the beginning...
I also expect it to be rather cool as we get near Julian so bring something warm.

Questions
The most common two questions I get are "My car is not a show car, it's just stock. Can I still attend?" and "I don't own a CRX, can I still take part in the event?". The answer is "Yes". There is also no cost to attend nor do you have to be part of any club or group.
I'll be sending out another email sometime later in the week.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
