Dan, Using your own SMTP from a dynamic IP (cable, DSL and modem access, for example) fails because of (the brain-dead) black-listing of dynamic IP blocks to prevent spam -- see http://dynablock.easynet.nl and http://www.pan-am.ca/pdl/
Also, as seems to be the norm now, most viruses come with a primitive SMTP engine built into them -- which, again, taints dynamic IPs (since many home machines are inflected).
