Thanks for your feedback, Jeff.

Based on old e-mails on this list, which showed some
of the errors caused by leaving out the -a, I don't
think my errors are related to that.

Besides, since the past is listed as required for gcc
3.2, I don't think I'll be able to compile
successfully without the patch.
