We have just become aware of another patent application that will affect many in NZ, including us. In summary it is an application for a patent on price and product labels that a retailer might produce where the text and image on the label comes from a database.
Our Chreos (www.chreos.co.nz) users have been able to do this for a number of years but we don't have the financial resource to object to the application. (I assume that there is a cost involved?) This feels like someone getting a patent for the process of hammering a nail into a piece of wood ... now there's an idea! The Abstract/Abridgement from the patent office website says ... Patent 508630 "A labeling system for producing a physical label in a retail premises comprises: a product information database in which is stored product information representing one or more retail products available for sale from a retail premises; a product retrieval component configured to retrieve product data representing a product from the product information database; a product images database in which is stored electronic images associated with one or more products in the product information database; an image retrieval component configured to retrieve image data representing the retrieved product from the product image database and a product label generator configured to produce the physical label from the retrieved product information and the retrieved image data with the physical label being arranged for display near the retail products in the retail premise."
