Anecdotal evidence would suggest that what you describe above is happening
-- I've heard of positions/people via talking with folk at the CSI BBQ and
Elevator Cafes.

And I've been contacted by people asking if they can come along to those
events to see if they can make suitable contacts for job hunting -- when
they have, I've made an effort to introduce them to someone I know from
the same software area. (After all, today's competition may be tomorrow's
employer..or employee!)

Yes, it's an area that needs developing, but we (that is, the CSI
committee, and specifically me as current CSI Web wrangler) have been
concentrating on other areas of the Website.

One way of trying to cover the bases in the interim was the hook-up with
Real Contacts, as well as the simple listing on the Website.

I would have assumed that the listings there are either from people who
are local or are planning on becoming locals. We've kept an eye on it from
time to time to eliminate any "spammy" listings offering discount
developers from obscure countries, but have pretty much left it alone.

Good thought -- I think you've got a good listing there Adrian, as it's
always helpful to know exactly what a person is offering (and great to see
a special offer for CSI folk too :-).

Whoops, I missed those double-ups, my apologies. We'll pull the duplicates
off (there's always a tension between the time/cost in human management
and the convenience/abuse of automation...). We've usually tried to leave
the listings on for a good long time, just to give an indication of the
activity and areas of interest.

One of the things we've been hoping with getting our facilitator is to put
some time into looking at the IT job market in Christchurch. Monitoring
jobs, following up on what has been filled (and what not), asking about
possible positions during CSI member/company visits etc all provide info
useful for assessing the needs and health of the software industry (as
well as being of practical helop to the people and companies involved!).

To be truly effective, it may well require a more proactive approach than
we are able to give it at this point, given the limited resources and
broad strategic areas CSI hopes to cover.

But I'm sure any of the CSI committee members would be delighted to be
buttonholed on how we can make improvements in this area, if there are any
strategic alliances that could be useful and so forth. Fire away!
