GET REAL TELECOM: An online petition calling for Telecom to review its JetStream pricing policy was on its way to collecting 4000 signatures. Petition organiser Keith Humm says Telecom needs to listen to the customers who use the service. He says Telecom's emphasis on data caps rather than speed is the wrong approach to take. http://www.petitiononline.com/nzadsl/petition.html ITC SECTOR CHIEF: Christchurch-based Paul Claridge will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of a growth strategy for the information and communications technology (ICT) sector in his new national role as ICT sector director with NZ Trade and Industry. Prior to the merger of Trade NZ and Industry NZ, Claridge was Industry NZ�s southern region general manager, responsible for business and regional economic development. SME GRANTS: NZ Trade and Enterprise has launched a new grant scheme for small and medium businesses that is similar to the previous Enterprise Awards Scheme run by Industry New Zealand. It is open to businesses or entrepreneurs employing fewer than 20 full-time staff or with turnover of less than $5 million, who can pay 50% of a range of external costs. The maximum grant is $20,000 a year. Some funding is available for mentoring and for management and technology-based training. The costs of market research done by NZTE are not eligible. NETWORKING ON CAMPUS: NZ Computer Society will be bringing tertiary students and the IT industry together at a Canterbury University campus get together next week. Mark Billinghurst, director of HitLab (NZ) will Talk on "Back to Reality" and NZCS is looking for a good turnout of industry people to help show students the extent of the ICT industry in Christchurch and underline that although employment is slow at the moment, the future is bright. BilLinghurst�s lecture will be followed by refreshments and networking. Be there at 5.30pm on Thursday September 18, in Room E1, at the Engineering School. Enter the campus under the mushroom-shaped engineering building on Creyke Rd. Go straight through this building and take the stairs on your right. E1 is the upper part of the "mushroom". MOBILE FOCUS: Communications Minister Paul Swain has announced details of a new ICT research group that will see New Zealand and overseas companies working in partnership in mobile communications. He says the aim is to up a platform for designing, building and trial deploying mobile applications. The Mobile Research Group (MRG) is a MediaLab South Pacific initiative led by Scott Jenson. AISEC Canterbury president Joel Newman told last week�s Elevator Caf� that the organisation could provide �cream of the crop� graduates from 88 countries for projects like strategic planning to enter offshore markets, and translation of documentation. The centerpiece of the campaign is a 90-second television commercial, uncharacteristic of IBM, that is reminiscent of the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
