WEVE GOT THE IDEAS, NOW ROLL OUT THE TECHNOLOGY
By CAROL WEBB

Kiwis have no shortage of good ideas for harnessing the power of
fast broadband access to the internet, but they are sick of waiting
for it to be widely available, affordable, and truly high-speed.
That was the message from a high-speed internet roadshow brought to
Christchurch last week by the Telecommunications Users Association
of New Zealand (Tuanz).

IMPORTANT QUESTION: In the 20 issues since May, CSI's hyperLINK has
brought you lots of
stories, news and info, going to almost 800 hi-tech players and
sector observers. We want to get continued financial backing for
it, and need to know this: Is hyperLINK helpful to your business?
Simply email CSI Facilitator James Saruchera, saying Yes or No.
(Further comments would be appreciated!.

WALKING THE TALK: A free, must-do Canterbury Software Inc marketing
workshop on Wednesday October 1 from 9am to noon will be run by
Wellington-based advertising/PR/marketing guru Warwick McCormack.
Register your interest in the workshop now or obtain details from
Nicky Leadley, phone 0800 249 232, e-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] And
there's more: presenter McCormack will be available for one-to one
follow-up coaching, fully funded by New Zealand Trade and
Enterprise, the day following the workshop. You can take advantage
of this opportunity by making an appointment with him during the
workshop. NB: the workshop and follow-up coaching are open to CSI
members only. If you're not already a member, sign up here
http://www.canterburysoftware.org.nz/join.htm Membership is only
$50 a year and this workshop alone is worth every cent of that.

IRD PICKS ACER: The Inland Revenue Department has selected Acer as
its preferred supplier of PCs for the next three years with an
option to extend the relationship for a further two years. Inland
Revenue expects to buy about 1000 PCs a year during the period.
Other government agencies will be able to buy PCs from Acer on the
same terms and conditions negotiated by Inland Revenue. IRD did not
previously have a preferred supplier and had been sourcing PCs from
suppliers including Dell, Compaq (now Hewlett-Packard) and IBM.

DYNAMIC GROWTH: Christchurch electronics company Dynamic Controls,
the worlds leading manufacturer of controls for wheelchairs and
scooters, is to triple capacity with investment of $2.5 million in
new surface mount equipment for its Christchurch plant. The new
equipment includes three high speed component placement machines,
leaving some of the older surface mount equipment to be used in a
prototyping capacity. Dynamic exports 98% of its products to
Europe, Asia and the US. The company, owned by Invacare
Corporation, employs 535 people in its Christchurch operation, up
from 380 since last December.

MENTORS SIGN UP: Four high growth technology companies have signed
on for mentor roles in the connector programme developed by
Auckland University's Icehouse business accelerator. Navman, Argent
Networks, Esphion and TVD will mentor the 10 qualifiers for the
universitys student-led "spark" entrepreneurship challenge,
introducing them to commercial contacts in industry who can assist
them in converting their ideas into viable businesses.

LEADING THE TEAM: NZ Trade and Enterprise has named Gordon
Stevenson as director of its new Information and Communications
Technology team. Stevenson has been working in Wellington as a
business development advisor for Industry New Zealand. He has 25
years experience in ICT in the UK and NZ.

LINUX TARGETED: The Linux server operating system has been the
target of 67% of all successful overt intruder attacks, according
to a study by UK-based research company Mi2g. It said attacks
against Linux were three times higher than against Microsoft
Windows, which accounted for 23.2%. In August alone, the company
found that 12,892 Linux online servers running e-business and
information sites were successfully breached. During the same
period, 4626 Windows servers were victims of successful intrusion.

NEED TO KNOW: IT companies doing business in the US need to come to
grips with the rules and regulations of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act
(SOA, according to US technology market specialist and CSI member
Mark Ripma. SOA, the new accounting reform and investor protection
legislation passed by Congress, in essence holds top executives
personally responsible for misrepresentation of company
performance. Ripma says it is having a big effect on the way US
corporations do business. Recommended reading: Five Things IT Needs
