TODAY (NOVEMBER 13): Computer Science Department, University of
Canterbury at 5.45pm (note change of day due to Friday being Show

be outside the Maths, Stats and and Computer Science building, with
plenty of free parking in the adjacent car park, off Ilam Road. For
directions see http://www.cosc.canterbury.ac.nz/Images/cmap.gif

SINGAPORE DEAL: Auckland-based IT company Quantel International and
Singapore-based consultancy JAS Brand Creations have joined forces
to develop and market brand management tools for businesses in
Asia. The alliance, which has had practical advice and support from
both New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and Singapores Economic
Development Board, centres on Quantel Internationals Q100 Business
Assessment System that is already used widely in New Zealand,
particularly by business advisors assessing business capability
for client companies.

PRICE ALERT: The price of some business software could rise by 15
per cent after Inland Revenue ruled that software leases should be
treated as licensing arrangements liable for withholding tax, a tax
expert warns. Ernst & Young director Catherine Shaw says businesses
which lease software from overseas suppliers must now deduct 15 per
cent, and in some cases 30 per cent, of the value of each lease
payment as non-resident withholding tax. - Stuff

$40M FOR ICT GROWTH: The Government will spend more than $40
million over the next four years on a 10-year project to have 100
high-tech companies turning over $100 million a year. The funding
package includes $1.5m over four years for the Higrowth Project
(http://www.higrowth.co.nz), a charitable trust set up by ICT
Taskforce members with a five-member board headed by SolNet founder
Murray McNae and a 30-member advisory council. Projects which
support the technology curriculum in secondary schools will get $8m
over four years and $5.6 million will go to FutureInTech, a
national ICT awareness programme for secondary school students. -
