MICROSOFT .NET OPPORTUNITIES FOR SMALL DEVELOPMENT HOUSES

Chris Auld, managing director of Dunedin smart client applications
firm kognition and one of Microsoft's Deep South .NET apostles, says
sharing has become a characteristic of the .NET community.
Auld, who is also facilitator of the Dunedin .NET user group and
recognised as a national expert on the Microsoft development
platform, says a wave of collaboration is sweeping through Kiwi
branches of the community as developers begin to see there is more
money to be made offshore as part of a loose consortium than back in
New Zealand on their own.
"There is increasingly an understanding that we shouldn't be
competing for New Zealand dollars, and I'm trying hard to hammer that
home in our Dunedin community," Auld says. "Let's not compete for New
Zealand dollars - let's collaborate for US dollars."

*RESEARCH FOCUS*

While 80% of organisations will outsource at least one IT function by
2005, it will not be an easy ride for service providers. Michael
Herman reports.

New research from META Group shows widespread growth of outsourcing
but cautions service providers not to be complacent.
The US-based company says although IT outsourcing will be used by 80%
of organisations by next year, many will reduce both the scope and
the duration of their original service agreements.
