SEPTEMBER 16: Human Interface Technology Lab (HIT Lab) Open House from 4pm to 7pm at Old Maths Building, University of Canterbury. One of the major attractions will be a Lord of the Rings interactive motion capture experience, where visitors move in front of a huge screen and are recreated as a virtual orc, elf or hobbit. SEPTEMBER 16: Learn the CustomerCentric Selling� sales process from its inventor, Mike Bosworth, a leading authority on selling IT products and solutions at a one-day workshop. Bosworth has trained over 20,000 sales people in the US where he is regarded as one of the best in the business. SEPTEMBER 23: �Expand Your Business in the UK�. A FREE seminar at Canterbury Innovation Incubator, 200 Armagh Street, Christchurch, 8.00 am to 9.30 am (includes breakfast). The seminar is hosted by UK Trade & Investment and NZ Trade and Enterprise. This is billed as a �one-stop-shop� workshop and features practical advice and assistance from experts from UK Trade & Investment, NZ Trade and Enterprise, HSBC, the Visas Section of the British High Commission, the Welsh Development Agency and the North of England Development Agency. SEPTEMBER 23 to 26: China International Machinery & Electronic Products Exposition (CWME), Wuhan City, Hubei Province. This is the fifth showcase of advanced machinery and electronic products from China and around the world, and is the largest professional Chinese exposition in the machinery and electronics industry. To date, more than 500 overseas companies, manufacturers from over 30 countries, and more than 2000 domestic machinery and electronics enterprises have been represented at the CWME, attracting over 80,000 businessmen and around 500,000 visitors. The Wuhan Economic Development Commission has gifted a booth to the city of Christchurch, and the Canterbury Development Corporation will be leading a team to the CWME. Michael Herman reports. Christchurch College of Computing has scored a hat-trick in the Australasian Schools Computer Competition, with one of its students taking national top place for the third year in a row. Seventeen year old James Higgins scored the top mark in New Zealand for his year group and gained a gold medal, competing alongside 124,000 students from Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. [more here http://canterburysoftware.org.nz/current.htm#feature1 ] ############### *TECH NEWSBYTES* September 13: IBM has announced a new computer server using its Power5 microprocessor tuned for the popular Linux operating system, as the No. 1 computer maker aims to broaden the adoption of Linux in broader corporate computing markets. The OpenPower server, starting at $US5000 with one Power5 chip, can run either Novell�s SuSe version of Linux or Red Hat�s, IBM said. Linux is already available on the previous generation of IBM�s Power chips. The OpenPower 720 server will be available later this month and can be powered by as many as four Power5 chips. September 13: Reuters reports that India�s software exports are on track to grow by 30% in the year to March 2005, despite attempts in the key US market to discourage outsourcing and protect jobs. India�s information technology (IT) sector and business process outsourcing (BPO) industries, which offer back office and call center services, logged exports worth $US12.5 billion in the 2003-2004 fiscal year. Almost a quarter of the exports come from the top three companies in the sector � Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys Technologies and Wipro, involving 800,000 workers. September 13: IBM is donating software for speech-enabled applications to the open source community to help spur standardisation for speech-enabled applications. The computing giant said it was donating Reusable Dialog Components (RDCs) to Apache Software Foundation and speech editors to the Eclipse Organisation. [more here http://canterburysoftware.org.nz/current.htm#newsbyte1 ] September 10: Tait subsidiary Wirelessdata has solved the problem of unreliable Road User Charges (RUC) monitoring, making it easier for fleet operators to claim back from the LTSA for kilometres travelled by diesel vehicles off public roads. The company�s product, TRAKD, a GPS-based total vehicle management system launched last year, is packed with enhanced features to help reduce fleet operators� costs, increase productivity, and improve driving habits, according to managing director Boris Bruges. According to the survey results, BEA WebLogic Server is the leading J2EE application server on the market today, with the highest installed base in both the development and production phases of enterprise application implementation, and the highest developer mind share. [more here http://canterburysoftware.org.nz/current.htm#newsbyte3 ] September 9: Business intelligence company SAS is working with Intel to bring SAS9 to the Linux 64-bit operating system on the Intel Itanium 2 processor by late this year. SAS says its product is one of the first major enterprise business intelligence platforms to be ported to Linux running on Itanium 2 processor-based servers, giving its customers the choice of using the open source platform if it so wishes. SAS says this will help lower risk and increase ROI �by delivering a high-performance, scalable, secure platform with increased capabilities to address many of the most demanding aspects of enterprise computing�. [more here http://canterburysoftware.org.nz/current.htm#newsbyte4 ] September 9: Alternative telecommunications supplier Slingshot is offering free calling between its Anytime Plus customers if they also subscribe its internet and tolls services. Slingshot founder Annette Presley says Anytime Plus customers will get 500 free minutes every month � over 8 hours of free calling. The company has long been opposed to Telecom�s hold of the local loop and the limited competition in New Zealand�s telecom�s market, with Presley an outspoken critic of Telecommunications Commissioner Douglas Webb�s decision not to unbundle the local loop. September 9: Skype Technologies has officially launched its VoIP software for handheld devices, giving users of PDAs with Wi-Fi wireless local area network connectivity and the Pocket PC OS the ability to make unlimited calls from any Wi-Fi hot spot. Skype for Pocket PC enables cross-platform voice calls to other Skype users running Skype for Windows, Skype for Linux or Skype for Mac OS X. Among the features are a global directory and end-to-end encryption. The software can be downloaded for free at the company�s website, www.skype.com. September 8: Christchurch software engineer Nick Johnson�s �Maze Game� is the only New Zealand winner of The International Obfuscated C Code Contest (IOCCC), an annual event designed to show the importance of good programming style �in an ironic way�. Johnson�s game won the �Best Use of Vision� category. Johnson, who is 21 years old, works for Niche Software and has been programming in �C�, the world�s most widely used programming language, since he was 15.
