THE New South Wales Police service has put its network security systems under review and is seeking proposals for management of its firewall and intrusion detection systems.

The NSW Police Business and Technology Services department began an evaluation in May of its firewall architecture and the way it is managed.

The unit has called for expressions if interest from companies that provide managed security services. It also wants to evaluate the cost of bring all security management systems in house.

During its security review, the Business and Technology Services unit found while some components of its security were managed internally, others were outsourced, and some were managed by a combination of internal and external resources.

The review concluded that efficiency gains could be made through improved management of its security systems, prompting the call for expressions of interest.

The Police firewalls are based on Checkpoint, Symantec, Cisco and Cyberguard, and intrusion detection systems based on ISS (Internet Security Systems) and Symantec.

The Police said it would not accept proposals for wholly outsourced solutions. The Police will retain responsibility for hosting the its firewall systems, but would accept either a co-managed solution, or an entirely in-house framework.

Responses must be lodged with the Police by the close of business on November 11.
