TOP ACHIEVEMENT FOR HI-TECH LAUNCH PROGRAMME

Graduates of a Canterbury Development Corporation programme featured
strongly in the 2004 Deloittes Fast 50 Growth Companies. Michael
Herman reports.

Canterbury high-tech companies featured strongly in this year�s Fast
50, with PayGlobal making cracking a mention for the fourth year
running and graduates of Canterbury Development Corporation�s (CDC)
Hi-Tech Launch Programme taking 10% of all the honours.

ES Connectivity 04 Update: Electronics South�s inaugural showcase of
Canterbury�s electronics capability kicks off next week with a
stronger showing than expected. Companies have responded well to the
opportunity, with the organisers attracting 20% more exhibitors than
originally targeted and a steady stream of delegate pre-
registrations, with a sector spokesman saying they expect a few
hundred people to visit the exhibition.
He said there has been a lot of interest from Australia as this is
New Zealand�s first dedicated electronics expo and that they expect a
good representation from the other side of the Tasman.

Lessons from the Canterbury Software Summit: Canterbury Software
facilitator James Saruchera says credibility, finding appropriate
resellers and distributors, and reaching decision-makers at
prospective customers were verified as some of the top issues facing
local companies at the Canterbury Software Summit held earlier this
month. Saruchera says several cost-effective solutions were promoted
for software companies, including appearing at international
conferences to create the perception you are the accepted leader in a
specific niche.

Poised For Take-Off: Pacific Simulators, which ranks uber
entrepreneur and airline owner Mike Perro among its investors, is
attracting international interest in its unique aviation procedural
training systems. Stuart Whelan, technical director and board member
of the company, says the company has pioneered the custom low-cost
non-motion flight simulator market through developing its own
technology base and by using off-the-shelf components. �This actually
hasn�t been done in the simulator market before,� Whelan says.

Fertile Business: Fledgling Christchurch company Precision Tracking
is on the verge of closing some significant new deals and will be
taking on more investors to give it the financial grunt to benefit
from fresh opportunities. Founder and co-director Jeff Tait says the
company could multiply four-fold the number of units it has out in
the field by the end of the year.

The Dance of Mathematics: The University of Canterbury has been
awarded $22,000 by the Government�s Science and Technology Promotion
Fund to host events that show the wider public that mathematics is
done by �real� people and that dancing is often just combinatorics,
group action, and vector field flows. The Dance of Mathematics, which
mixes maths and music, is one of nine projects awarded a total of
$419,675 in the 2004 round of funding.

Businesses encouraged to invest in ICT: A seminar demonstrating the
benefits of research and development (R&D) for small to medium sized
businesses (SME�s) in the ICT sector is to be held in Wellington on
Wednesday 17 November. Organised by the Foundation for Research,
Science and Technology, the seminar will feature the leaders of some
of the country�s most successful companies and organisations engaged
in R&D in the ICT sector.
