Do you know if this limits the number of players to 10? I seem to be limited to 10 real players on a 15v15 server when it's dedicated..

All,

Further to previous emails concerning community servers and lack of
achievements, I believe I have the solution, which is stupidly simple...

Set "sv_allow_lobby_connect_only" to 1 (ON)! This is the OPPOSITE to what
may seem to be implied (and the behaviour in L4D2), but this performs the
necessary matchmaking lobby reservation when connecting as the 1st player
via the browser to a hibernating server.

If you test this, you will see a series of communications in the console
showing the server talk to matchmaking, make a lobby ID, and go through the
correct motions to register the server - and ultimately allow matchmaking as
well as achievements!

SAMPLE SCREENIE WITH CVAR SET TO '1'>

Not sure if this is due to a lack of clarity as to the behaviour of this
CVAR in CS:GO, an oversight, a bug or what - but despite the misleading
name, set it to ON always.

Nick

No, setting 'sv_search_key' does not limit your server solely to
matchmaking. Not for a loooong time now anyway. My L4D2 server is
connectable via "steam group servers", 'openserverbrowser' command,
matchmaking lobby with search key or force-dedicated set, or friends join
etc etc.

I can't see it's a problem with CS:GO either. You may be thinking of the
"sv_allow_lobby_connect_only" CVAR (set it to 0).

Nick

I've been playing around with this again.

One thing I wonder, when setting the sv_search_key, didn't that limit the
server to key searches only (back in l4d2?) my memories on that are a bit
hazy.

For the client; if I use the mm_ command alone, it wont direct me to my
server. If I set any random search key in my client and then use mm_ , it
sends me to my server (no key configured).

Hi Ido,

To summarise the problems / bugs seen at more length with regards to
community dedicated servers and achievements:

. Achievements / stats are NOT awarded on community dedicated servers
when the 1st player connecting to the hibernating server connects via the
browser. As most operators have been doing this, there was a belief that
community servers are designed not to award achievements. It would appear
achievements are tied in to whether matchmaking was used to place a lobby
reservation id on the server.
. 'net_graph 3' reports the game as "offline" when in fact you are on
a dedicated in the above scenario (?!)
. Using "find a game" matchmaking with a 'mm_dedicated_force_servers'
command behaves as expected (achievements, stats, "dedicated" 'net_graph')
. 'sv_search_key' functionality does NOT work for me in combination
with matchmaking (having set 'sv_search_key' and 'sv_tags' on the server) -
returns 0 results from MM when searching.
. To get the matchmaking method to work, you often have to do a
'changelevel' command on server console, presumably to flush out a bad
reservation (lobby id = 0) to allow a new connection.

Can you please investigate this behaviour, ideally correct it so
achievements can be awarded however you connect (i.e. via the "community
servers" browser). The matchmaking workaround is a little hit and miss,
although I have tested it successfully and awarded myself achievements/stats
on my server in this manner. It takes a lot of hands-on server op
involvement to get our community servers to allow achievements / matchmaking
traffic in this manner, and if at any time the server empties, the operator
must changelevel and be sure to connect again himself in this manner.

Perhaps you can clarify for the community was is the expected behaviour with
regards to achievements and 3rd party community servers?

Additionally, are there plans to implement a lobby system (a-la L4D2) so
that lobbies can decided to use "official servers". "best available" or
"steam group" servers? If the intention is to use official servers only for
matchmaking, here in the UK that means connecting to France (not acceptable
for CS:GO) or connecting to underperforming third party servers with rate
issues.

Please see my previous posts to the mailing lists for more info. Screenshots
are recycled here:

http://www.fussake.com/tc/csgo/server_browser-fail.jpg - connecting to a
hibernating community dedicated server gives lobby id 0, a warning message
about achievements, and bad net_graph status. No achievements / stats are
awarded.

http://www.fussake.com/tc/csgo/mm_force_dedicated-success.jpg - using
the "find a game" matchmaking system and using mm_dedicated_force_servers
gives a valid lobby reservation id, no warning, and a correct net_graph
status. Achievements / stats are awarded.

http://www.fussake.com/tc/csgo/sv_search_key-fail.jpg - using
sv_search_key instead of mm_dedicated_force_servers returns 0 results,
despite setting this on the server and seeing it present in the browser
master server list.

Nick

Cool, keep testing - glad others have seen success. I have earnt
achievements on my box and now seeing an influx of players once I idle there
through matchmaking.

I have experimented with all combos of sv_search_key and
mm_dedicated_force_servers use - overall, I can conclude its very "iffy". I
have run a summary email to Ido who enquired with me. If I do a changelevel
to clear a reservation, I can get in to my server 90% of the time using
"Find a game" and all is good. Still some odd moments where it doesn't work.
Generally, I do not use sv_search_key at all, and it still works as
reliably. So mileage may vary, or due to outside factors on the matchmaking
server we do not understand.

Hopefully this is all fixed soon. I cannot understand why achievements are
tied in to lobby reservations - this is not true for L4D2 or other titles,
and may just be an oversight / bug.

Nick

OK, as mentioned before, I think you need the sv_search_key set to the same
on both server and client. Seems to work fine for me. I've put into my
autoexec.cfg on my local machine :

sv_search_key "ToG"
mm_dedicated_force_servers 109.70.148.78:27017

And then Find a game picks this server up. I did need to do the mapchange
though.

Not sure why there were problems 2nd time around but I'm now running in
dedicated mode. Thank you so much Nick - what a star!

Investigations ongoing but it seems sv_search_key might be working..
maybe not as designed though :)

Do a "changelevel" on the server, and try again. I have witnessed a

There is a command to set a reservation timeout (default 45 secs)
but this doesn't seem to apply/help.

Any chance a SM plugin could force the server into the correct mode?

I've attempted to connect to my servers with the details you

Sorry, typo: "mm_dedicated_force_servers x.x.x.x:yyyyy" . What you
get for hammering out an email with the game closed.

To reiterate, those server ops coming from a CS:S / TF2 background,
you CAN still use the server browser in its current form to connect
and have other people connect, however you will not get players
through the matchmaking system and you will currently not get
achievements working (that I can see).
CS:GO seems to use the L4D2/portal codebase, so where possible
launch the 1st player into your server using the matchmaking system.

The catch of course is if the server hibernates and the next person
to connect to the hibernating server doesn't follow this rule.
hopefully they
will change this behaviour. On the plus side, I get the feeling the
lack of accomplishments on community servers is NOT intentional.

I would also like to know the answer to that and how to create a
lobby reservation.

Dear All,

I have a solution / workaround to the community server /
achievement issue, until such time the game gets flushed out with
a proper lobby system and left4dead2-esque menus (I think 5 on 5
team-versus lobbies were mentioned).

On the belief the issue highlighted that CS:GO was using the lobby
reservation system introduced in L4D2, I did some experiments with
'SV_SEARCH_KEY' and 'MM_FORCE_DEDICATED_SERVER', and used a
mixture of

the server browser (community servers) and the 'Find a game'
matchmaking system.

I believe the problem seen stems from the fact we are connecting
to our dedicated boxes using the community server browser list.
Doing so does not create a lobby reservation, and thus does not
enter the valve matchmaking system. This is the same result as
connecting to an empty server in L4D2 via 'openserverbrowser' or
the community-servers main menu list. You can see this by looking
at 2 things upon entering the
server:

1/ The console displays a message that "achievements/stats/etc are
disabled"

2/ 'net_graph 3' shows "offline" in the bottom-right

EXAMPLE: http://www.fussake.com/tc/csgo/server_browser-fail.jpg
[1]

Instead, you need to connect to your empty, hibernating server
using matchmaking ("find a game" menu entry) and forcing an IP
using the classic 'mm_force_dedicated_server' command. Ensure the
IP is of a server running the correct game mode / type! This makes
the connection go through matchmaking, make a lobby reservation,
create a game and connect to your server. You will now see:

1/ The console shows a lobby id (reservation)

2/ 'net_graph 3' shows "dedicated" in the bottom-right

EXAMPLE:
http://www.fussake.com/tc/csgo/mm_force_dedicated-success.jpg
[2]

In theory, 'sv_search_key' should do the same thing, however this
appears to be broken - testing shows that it does attempt to do
what is intended, but always reports "0 search results", when I
can clearly see servers in the browser with my custom key set.

EXAMPLE: http://www.fussake.com/tc/csgo/sv_search_key-fail.jpg [3]

TL;DR - Use "mm_force_dedicated_server x.x.x.x:xxxxx" and your
server IP, then use the "Find A Game" menu option ensuring you
choose the correct game mode for your server. Do not use the
community servers server-browser.

VALVE: Please fix the broken sv_search_key which is not returning
results as expected. Longer term I imagine we are going to see
L4D2 style "Team Versus" matchmaking for 5 on 5 pug wars I
suppose, and a fleshed out menu / lobby system, so I expect some
of the issues with community servers being connected to via the
browser is due to features not being complete or implemented yet?

P.s> Some of the official 3rd-party servers via matchmaking in
the UK are awful - terrible lag and 'IN' rate drops. NAMELY
"FREEGAMESERVERS.GG<http://FREEGAMESERVERS.GG>" - whoever admins
these, please sort them out -

they are consistently awful and unplayable, and why I resorted to
spending time using my own server which is better.

I've noticed that I cannot earn achievements in my own server nor
any other community server I've joined. Is there a setting that is
disabled by default, preventing achievements from being earned? I
can earn them just fine in valve servers. I usually check just by
getting a kill with any gun and seeing if the kill count
increments on the achievement page.
