Asking for upvotes is against the rules. However if you phrase it like "If you think this is good please remember to upvote." you're OK because you didn't specifically say upvote this blindly regardless of how good or valid the content is.
The lopsided and loopholes of how they enforce rules is totally broken. I moderate a decent number of subreddits and time and time again the admins have been a problem. They issue bans for broken rules incredibly haphazardly and let people they do or don't like off on technicalities. In the past from experience that is just what I can tell you about how they view and enforce the rules and how to maybe get it reserved. No guarantees however.
