I did something similar to what I think you are looking for here:
http://www.blueheronpondhoa.com/Resources/gallery.asp.

This just uses CSS, but it isn't the most semantic in terms of markup.
Unfortunately, I don't remember the resource I originally got the idea and
code from ...
