Having spent yet another day on this I feel I am now pretty close! I am using a background image repeated on the y axis to give me my 3 equal height columns but there's a catch! When I place the background image in the container that contains my 3 floated div columns - the background does not display (except in IE) because I am not setting height anywhere (ASAIK)... Some of the links teaching this method put the background on the body but this seems to cause other problems (1px shift mixed centering problem...) Is there anyway I can get the background to show without setting a height?
