Skip links are very common solutions, and don't have any accessibility 
issues. The techniques used for hiding is where the issues are. To avoid 
problems, hide the skip link with the "off left" technique described in 
http://css-discuss.incutio.com/?page=ScreenreaderVisibility

By the way, use the text "skip to MAIN content."  Without the adjective, 
some screen readers pronounce content the wrong way, as in contented, 
satisfied.
