I think it would be a lot easier.  If everyone learned with a strict
doctype we'd have faster development and lots of much better pages, I
think.

I first learned to code html without any doctypes at all, and ended up
wasting a lot of time learning bad coding practices which I am now
trying to unlearn.  So I think everyone should learn with a strict
doctype these days.
