Thank you for setting the record straight.  For some reason, I had it  
stuck in my head the xhtml 1.0 strict couldn't be served as text/ 
html, but the transitional doctype could.  After your comment  
prompted me to reread the relevant portions of the spec[1][2] I  
discovered you were absolutely right.  I generally use html because  
that's how browsers treat the code when served as text/html, and  
because some browsers still don't know how to display application/ 
xhtml+xml[3].
