Could you give us a URL with a dummy of your proposal, or describe what 
it is you're styling in more detail? I think any compromise would have 
to be tailored to the situation.

To be honest, I do see fixed elements as a bit of a flashy luxury - and 
something that is often used irresponsibly to create cumbersome designs. 
More than a few times I've considered finally pushing the boat out on 
this technique, only to realise a CSS2-only solution ended up more elegant.
