Oops! Sorry, yes, I missed that bit of your post, somehow thinking you wanted it to fill the table cell. You are right about the float "shrinking to fit." AKAIK the only browser that does *not* behave this way is IE 5 for the Mac. That was not a bug at the time it was written - the specs changed after IE 5 Mac was finished. I think you can safely ignore that browser. Microsoft does.
