Many thanks, Jukka!  Thanks to your and many others' helpful feedback, 
I have come to understand this issue much better, and have figured out
how to use :focus, :active and your 'Boolian-type' mark-up to replace 
the default focus 'outline' in both FF and IE6 with a style of my own choosing.

This - your newest post - takes us even further, to a deeper perspective.
