What you did wrong (in my case) is to assume I like to play games.

The probability an invalid page without a doctype will work
cross-browser is slim to none.

1/ Add a doctype and character encoding:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd";>
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"; xml:lang="en" lang="en">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Style-Type" content="text/css" />
<title>whatever your title is</title>

2/ Run the page through Tidy On-line to clean the markup
<http://infohound.net/tidy/>

3/ Validate the markup
<http://validator.w3.org/>

4/ Validate the CSS
<http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/>

5/ Check the valid page cross-browser

6/ Bring the valid page back to the list with any questions you have
