An image is indeed inline by default, and align itself on the text
baseline with room for descenders. That caused the gap and extra height,
and the gap/height will change with font-resizing.
'Standard' mode vs. 'quirks' mode play a role for the vertical alignment
of an image, even though the image defaults to inline.
- In 'quirks' mode, an image not surrounded by text, will line up _as_ a
block element without extra space.
- In 'standard' (Strict) mode, an image will line up with room for
descenders, even when there's no text there.
- In 'almost standard' (Transitional) mode (in some browsers), an image
will line up _as_ a block element when not surrounded by text, and with
room for descenders when surrounded by text.
IE/win doesn't have an 'almost standard' mode, and will apply 'standard'
mode.
