No, don't disregard this post. Hedgar Wang's [1] and Bill Brown's [2] 
technique solves for another problem: how to archieve a transparent, 
monochrome background surface in IE  < 7 ?

The prior attempts used the alphaimageloader filter and a PNG-alpha, but 
the consecutive probblems with links not beeing clickable needed a 
complex workaround [3].

The gradient filter attempt with startcolor=endcolor doesn't seem to 
suffer from the unclikable links problem anymore. The container needs 
haslayout like with any filter, but that's all.

A little late for IE6, but nevertheless an innovative approach.
