Ok - I put the IE-expressions in conditional comments in the HTML.
Everything validates on this file!  Thanks for the help once again,
list and Georg.

The only thing that's not to my liking is the bottom shadow of the
bluish content box in IE6.  It gaps as some wide widths and sticks out
on the right on narrow widths.  I've tried everything I know, but to
no avail. I have half a mind to just leave it  IE7 does better with
it.
