Dunno. How about saying it was sort of an "illogical conclusion" (trial 
and error) based on reading the markup inorder to find the selector(s) 
enclosing the misaligned elements.

* html .grid_16 {border : 1px solid fuchsia;} <--- :: feeding IE/6 this 
test-only-border confirmed .grid_16 /might/ be the trigger for hasLayout.

Adding the star hack to the /entire/ declaration made IE/6 stand-up and 
pay attention (reinforced) it. Removing any one of the rules in the 
ruleset failed.
