There is some interaction between the line-box generated by the h1 and the 
preceding floated blocks on the front page (interaction that doesn't exist on 
the other pages).

Have you considered taking those two floated blocks out of the flow, and 
position them absolute ? (and set a margin-top on the h1 in ems instead of 
px... font-size can change, you know).
