I would recommend that you use padding on the <a>s instead of using line-height. Give the <a>s as much work to size themselves and their ancestors. You don't have to use as much height also.
I thought I play around with some CSS3. Only seems to work in Safari 5. Possibly relating to syntax that may be changed.
