Yeah, compatibility mode is neither man nor beast. That is very interesting. I'll get testing when I find a moment — don't suppose there's any particular test cases you can represent? As an aside, ubiquitous IE7 (& 8 in 7 mode) bugs relating to page zoom and intermittent rounding errors / layout calculation mistakes (eg random clearing floats that only show at one and four zoom levels up) often get a big fat Won't Fix from my desk.
