I've removed most of the ugly blankness of my splash page, but two
technical problems remain.

1-The horizontal positioning of the navigation and the text/pic content
only work on a 1024x768 screen. I set the first at 25 percent width and
the second at 75 percent width thinking they would adapt to different
screen sizes. I suspect the reason it breaks on a narrower screen is
that both items are floated and don't "see" each other, therefore can't
work out the 25%/75% space.

2-The bottom color bars are supposed to sit at the bottom of the screen,
and there should be no scrolling. It's based on the second link here,
but my version ain't working.
