Have you checked how white-space in such an arrangement is handled in browsers with 'minimum font size' set, 'font size ignored' or font-size overridden ?

The results from using such an arrangement used to be "pretty flaky" across browser-land in years past. I have only checked that all new browsers have such options, not how they handle that particular case.
