The code isn't mine, though I've used that and also other techniques for fluid 
layouts with extreme demands.

Just read the CSS code and do your own version one step at a time. Use a real 
time tool like the Web Developer plug-in, Firebug or similar, so that the page 
renders while you write the CSS code. That's how you learn. 

This method is just one and if it's viable depends on the requirements you have 
in the project where you're going to use it.
