You can use display inline-block, left 50% (relative to offset parent) and
transform translateX( -50% ) (relative to self) to achieve this effect with
variable width: http://jsbin.com/ruwada/1/edit?css,output

I am not averse to custom HTML elements, and have been known to use them myself for experimental purposes, but I am not convinced that it is a good idea to tacitly recommend their use to others without at the very least emphasising their non-conformant nature :

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
  <meta charset="utf-8">
  <title>JS Bin</title>
</head>
<body>
  <haiku>
    lend me your arms<br/>
    fast as thunderbolts<br/>
    for a pillow on my journey
  </haiku>
</body>

Error Line 8, Column 9: Element haiku not allowed as child of element body in this context. (Suppressing further errors from this subtree.)

  <haiku>
